User Guide
- Version 2.42o
The
OPEN 501R User Guide
provides an overview of the ADSL router, including its features, and
applications. It provides information for hardware installation, access
to the router and initial configuration of the router. For most users it
provides sufficient information to setup and operate the router.
Advanced users can update software/firmware and restore default settings
(3.5 MB zipped PDF file).
Quick Start Guide -
Australia
The
OPEN 501R Quick Start
Guide provides users in Australia set up and configuration
information (222 kb PDF file).
Quick Start Guide - New
Zealand
The
OPEN 501R Quick Start
Guide provides users in New Zealand set up and configuration
information (230 kb PDF file).
Configuration Backup and
Restore
How to
Backup and Restore an
OPEN 501R configuration (291 kb PDF file).
Default Route in PPP
Instructions on how to set the default route in the
OPEN 501R when
connecting via PPP to the Internet. This results in a router that
appears to be working correctly but you are unable to surf the web (127
kb PDF file).
Pinholing PPTP and IPSec
Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)
and IPSec are commonly used to create VPNs through the Internet. When using PPTP
or IPSec with
the OPEN 501R a "pinhole" through the address translation process needs to be
created so that the OPEN 501R knows where to send traffic coming in from the
Internet
(119 kb PDF file).
Securing the OPEN 501R
The OPEN 501R
router may be managed locally via the RS-232 console and remotely via
HTTP, telnet and SNMP. Once the OPEN 501R has been installed, it is wise
to
secure it from unauthorized access
via these management interfaces
(202 kb PDF file).
ADSL Line Stability
The factory default settings for the OPEN 501R have trellis
encoding and bit swapping turned off. While this is adequate for most
situations, if your OPEN 501R is having problems training up to the
ADSL
line these features should be enabled to improve the stability of the ADSL
line
(131 kb PDF file).
Traffic Monitoring
Monitoring the
traffic through your 501R has several uses: verify link performance,
verify billing data, and detect possible hacking of your network. To
monitor the traffic, a freeware SNMP tool is used. There are many free
SNMP network management/monitoring tools avaibale on the Internet, but
here we will use MRTG, an easy to use package for Windows and UNIX/Linux.
This application note will not go into detail on how to install MRTG but
will provide links to install documentation on the Internet (49
kb PDF file).
Reset to Factory
Defaults - Password Recovery
It is possible
to restore the 501R to the factory defaults if you have forgotten the
administrator password.
This requires physical access to the 501R to use the RS232 console port.
Performing the reset clears the configuration, including PPP passwords, so
use this with caution (25 kb PDF file).
