Using VPNs
To Build a Low Cost High Performance Branch Network
The following network is a real design that was created in conjunction with a leading Systems Integrator.

Key aspects of the design:
- IPSec VPNs are used for connectivity between branches and head office.
- An OPEN 531R SHDSL Router is used for the head office connection. This provides symmetrical transmission speeds up to 2.3Mbps. Use of a symmetrical service at the head office is essential to allow branch offices satisfactory access to head office data.
- OPEN 501R and OPEN 507R routers at each branch give robust and speedy performance.
- The client required all public Internet access to go through a single firewall where access to content and protocols can be controlled. The OPEN524R routers are configured to ensure all access is via head office. Here again the head office symmetrical connection allows satisfactory speeds for routing internet traffic.
- At small branch offices the four port hub built into the OPEN524R was sufficient to provide connection for all computers (at Head Office it was connected to an existing network).
- The system also supplies Remote access for standalone PC connections from employees homes.
